I haven’t done it for a long time.
That abandon style dancing. Clubs and sweat and your limbs aren’t yours. I’ve been working with dancers and choreographers and it’s made me think about when I started off with ballet. 5 years old and not my choice – it was to fix my flat feet and it didn’t and it made me feel awkward. An then 20 years after that it was the unofficial dance – capoeira. That fixed something alright.
I’ve been inspired by www.uchennadance.com and woking with director Vicki. The dance sector is broad – a fusion of styles and people and this needs to be represented. It’s struck me how much education is needed to allow joe public and arts professionals to see this sector as valuable beyond just entertainment. And the R&D work with www.hannahmeraki.com – the systems geek in me comes out to explore Laban’s effects and how she is using BSL as a choreographic tool for dancers.
Uchenna Dance – The Head Wrap Diaries coming soon
I am also developing my own dance element to an existing audio walk piece. I’ve only ever imagined creating this work for a specific site with the interior or exterior as the main show. What will happen to the soundscape when people populate those spaces. People that move.
“I have no desire to prove anything by dancing. I have never used it as an outlet or a means of expressing myself. I just dance. I just put my feet in the air and move them around.” Fred Astaire
