Richard grew up in the area and is an expert on local history, running guided walks in the park. It’s strange how knowing about what went on there can tweak your feel of a place. As a child he had no idea that the park was the back yard to the Duke of Wellington’s nephew – the Earl of Tilney. By the sounds of it, a character holding show stopping parties and fleecing his wives of their money. He was gay. I can’t imagine what it was like to be so against the norm because of your sexuality in 1786. He fled to Italy as a result. Good call.
